5 Looks at the giver

In Lois Lowry's novel, The Giver, I chose these groups of words that gave
a better understanding of the book.
  1. Individualism- People in Jonas's society ignore peoples differences and are treated all the same. When Jonas begins to question the values of his community he begins to think for himself. About why people follow this or do that. He analyses that the community is dependent of itself and their is truly no differences.
  2. Pain- When becoming a twelve one of the elders tells Jonas that this community has never seen pain. And that he will be face with pain of the magnitude that none of us here can comprehend. The community has never enjoyed life because they haven't felt pain or any kind of emotion. They are blocked from every aspect from it. Death isn't tragic to them because they haven't experience it. Instead they are released and its seen as an honor. When Jonas receives memories discovers pain in them but also open him to other emotions like love and etc.
  3. Memory- Memory has a lot to do with pain. People have no idea of the past and without past you have no memory of what pain is. They have no experience of pain, love, or sexual pleasure. This is controlled by the elders with a simple pill to reject sexual pleasure. Causing them to be neutral plus living in peace and harmony.
